Artist Statement
This body of work is centered around the discomfort of being a conscious mind inside a fleshy vessel. Essentially, what it means to me to exist as a human being and understand animating this human form. I’m guided by my experiences of malaise, and it has inspired me to tap into this discomfort. Visually, these works are stripped self-portraits intended to reimagine the body’s physical reality in an abstracted form. A new relationship is created between myself and my perception of myself existing as a human being. I connect objective reality to a physical form. I am investigating themes that explore a greater sense of my whole self through dissected imagery and by emphasizing relationships of body parts; I highlight how we are the sum of our parts. The mind and body come together to create the individual, and I accentuate this by disjoining and reforming these structures. As I develop these ideas, my intention is to move in a direction that brings together my mind and body in a way that allows me to see beyond the discomfort.
